How to Buy a Green Card Legally

If you are a foreign citizen who wants to live and work permanently in the United States, you may be wondering if you can buy a green card. A green card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, allows you to enjoy many rights and benefits as a lawful permanent resident. However, buying a green card is not as simple as paying a fee and getting one. There are legal and legitimate ways to obtain a green card through investment, marriage, employment, or humanitarian reasons. Here are some of the options you can explore:

  • Invest your way in. The EB-5 immigrant investor program allows you to get a green card by investing at least $1,050,000 in a new commercial enterprise that will benefit the U.S. economy and create at least 10 full-time jobs for qualifying employees. If you invest in a targeted employment area or an infrastructure project, the minimum amount is $800,000. You must also prove that your investment funds come from a lawful source and that you are actively involved in the management of the business.
  • Marry your way in. If you are married to a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident, you may be eligible to get a green card through family-based immigration. Your spouse must sponsor you by filing a petition on your behalf and proving that your marriage is bona fide and not entered into for immigration purposes. You must also meet the eligibility requirements and pass the background checks and medical exams.
  • Transfer your way in. If you work for a multinational company that has an office in the United States, you may be able to get a green card through an inter-corporate transfer. You must have worked for the company for at least one year in the past three years in a managerial or executive position or in a specialized knowledge role. Your employer must file a petition on your behalf and demonstrate that you will continue to work for them in the same or similar capacity in the United States.
  • Seek refuge or asylum. If you are afraid of persecution or harm in your home country because of your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group, you may be able to get a green card by seeking refuge or asylum in the United States. You must apply for refugee status before entering the United States and for asylum within one year of arrival. You must also prove that you meet the definition of a refugee or an asylee and that you are not barred from receiving protection.

Buying a green card illegally is not only risky but also unnecessary. There are many legal ways to obtain a green card that can suit your situation and goals. However, getting a green card can be a complex and lengthy process that requires careful planning and preparation. It is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney who can guide you through the steps and help you avoid any pitfalls or delays.
