His uncle had bribed a government official to declare him dead so that he could inherit his land. Lal Bihari then embarked on a long and arduous legal battle to prove that he was alive. He changed his name to Lal Bihari Mritak (meaning Lal Bihari the dead) and formed the Mritak Sangh, an association of people who were also declared dead by the government.
