The Guard: A New Superhero Series Coming to Netflix
Netflix has announced a new original series called The Guard, based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. The show will follow a group of superheroes who have been active since the 1930s, but have to face a new threat in the modern world.
The Guard is described as a “grounded, gritty and realistic” take on the superhero genre, exploring the personal lives and challenges of the heroes. The cast includes Oscar Isaac as Utopian, the leader of the team; Charlize Theron as Lady Liberty, his wife and partner; Tom Holland as Paragon, their rebellious son; Zendaya as Chloe, their estranged daughter; and Idris Elba as Brainwave, Utopian’s brother and rival.
The show will be produced by Millarworld, the company that Millar founded after selling his comic book properties to Netflix in 2017. Millar is also the creator of other popular comics such as Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Wanted, which have been adapted into successful movies. He will serve as an executive producer and showrunner for The Guard, along with Quitely and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
The Guard is expected to premiere on Netflix in late 2023, with 10 episodes in the first season. Netflix has already ordered a second season, as well as a spin-off series focusing on Chloe’s adventures. Fans of Millar’s comics can look forward to seeing his unique vision of superheroes on the small screen.
The Guard is not the only superhero series that Netflix has in the works. The streaming giant is also developing adaptations of Jupiter’s Legacy, another comic by Millar and Quitely; The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá; and The Sandman, based on the comic by Neil Gaiman and various artists. Netflix is also home to several Marvel shows, such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Punisher.
Netflix’s investment in superhero content is part of its strategy to compete with other streaming platforms, such as Disney+, which has exclusive rights to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises. Netflix has also been expanding its original content in other genres, such as sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comedy and drama. Some of its most popular shows include Stranger Things, The Witcher, Black Mirror, The Crown and BoJack Horseman.
Netflix has over 200 million subscribers worldwide, making it the largest streaming service in the world. It is available in over 190 countries and regions, and offers content in various languages and formats. Netflix also produces movies and documentaries, some of which have been nominated for or won prestigious awards, such as Roma, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Social Dilemma.
The Guard is one of the most anticipated shows of 2023, as it promises to deliver a fresh and original take on the superhero genre. The comic book series has been praised for its realistic and complex characters, its stunning and detailed artwork, and its epic and thrilling storylines. The show will also feature impressive visual effects and action sequences, as well as a talented and diverse cast of actors.
The Guard will appeal to fans of superheroes, as well as to viewers who enjoy drama, mystery and adventure. The show will explore themes such as family, legacy, morality and power, as well as the challenges and consequences of being a hero in a changing world. The show will also have a sense of humor and fun, as it will showcase the personalities and quirks of the heroes.
